Excellent book. Director, cowriter and actor Drew Casson puts in a convincing performance and Cherry Wallis is solid and accomplished on her acting debut. As a side note, and looking ahead to further Wildseed Studios-backed projects, there is hope for low budgeted indie films to get much needed help but they’ll want to be a lot cleverer if they head down the apocalyptic route like this one tries hard to do. “Hungerford” earned leeway for its early acts because it had to establish its setting and situation, going for a slowly built storyline whose pace made sense for the setup. The Darkest Dawn is a found footage feature, co-written by Casson, told from the point of view of 16-year-old Chloe (Bethan Mary Leadley), an aspiring journalist.
For some reason it was either not listed or hidden in the Sci-Fi section, where on top I found a film called "Hungerford" with the tag "Teen Screams" that completely turned me off. A refreshingly unbiased account of the months before and after America's greatest tragedy. So whenever I come across one I've not seen (or even heard of) before, I have to give it a try. AMPLIFY! Set in contemporary England during and in the immediate aftermath of a generic alien invasion (think blocky ships, colourful explosions and brain-stealing bugs), the film follows a ragtag group of survivors as they search for a safe haven. The acting is pathetic. Adam leaves the old man a gun, which he uses to commit suicide. I've seen better acting in at my local youth theatre. The first ten seconds into the film my heart sank. Digital label Wildseed Movies describe themselves as producing “punky genre feature films”. Looking for a way out of the tunnels, Cowen, Adam, Kipper, Chloe, and Sam find a defunct military staging area that cryptically references ‘Operation Ascalon.’ A dying medic uses her blood to draw a circle around Manchester on a map. Part of Casson’s ability to do that comes from masking seams within the “found footage” frame. Phil becomes possessed by a parasite.
Mum lets us know Chloe has rare blood, big feet, and can touch her nose with her tongue. The human race is about to disappear and the girl has cold blood to record every single passage of her day. Its a not too shabby effort.
The longer their talking head interactions go on against bland backgrounds, the more a desire develops to return above ground where pulse beams are leveling buildings and trigger-happy troops are taking out insects and infected. The Darkest Dawn holds a decent amount of intrigue but it lacks in narrative progression and while ambitious in its desires, you do spend a lot of time just waiting for the action to kick back, hoping to be surprised or not really minding who dies.
NOBODY talks like this, it's all soundbites.
