Matthew McConaughey The son of Cleveland Sellers, a Civil Rights warrior and friend of Martin Luther King, Jr., Stokely Carmichael, Jesse Jackson, and Julian Bond, Bakari was destined to join the struggle for racial equality and justice. Read Full Review >> “This is an approach book,” writes McConaughey, adding that it contains “philosophies that can be objectively understood, and if you choose, subjectively adopted, by either changing your reality, or changing how you see it. ‧ This is a very timely book given all we are going through in this country. He artfully weaves together his story with his dad's. Mr. From his nod to his father and history. In My Vanishing Country, Sellers recounts what it meant to be Cleveland Sellers’ son. I grew up in a very homogenous world, I had no idea of the way black people were treated in the South during my lifetime. It's part memoir, part SC history, part cultural/political analysis and highlighted a lot of SC past that is clearly not taught in public schools. Anchored in in Bakari Sellers' hometown of Denmark, South Carolina, Country illuminates the pride and pain that continues to fertilize the soil of one of the poorest states in the nation. | Santa Barbara Business Owner Turns Himself in for Halloween Crimes, Goleta Union Students to Return to Campuses Full-Time This Spring, Jail Inmates Accused of Scamming COVID-19 Unemployment Funds, Family Service Agency of Santa Barbara County Provides Vital COVID Relief. This book affected me greatly. I came across this book totally by chance, but I am glad I did. How Bhakri grew, and the way his father led and raised him were great lessons for anyone of any race. Three unarmed black men were killed by police, many more were wounded, and Bakari’s father went to prison for seven months for crimes he didn’t commit. GENERAL CURRENT EVENTS & SOCIAL ISSUES. In 2006, Sellers made history, when, at the age of 22 and still in law school, he was elected to the South Carolina state legislature. A Naked Chelsea Handler Wants You To Read Books. I now consider this my first book on a journey to better understand. The food was just ok but the content was great. Very timely book! In her third book, Doyle (Love Warrior, 2016, etc.) Instead, I felt like his words enlightened my understanding and made me want to change myself and the world around me. Sellers grew up in the rural town of Denmark, South Carolina, where his family moved in 1990. Instead this is more straight biography. I highly recommend this book. Like the new generation of civil rights activists of which he is a part, Sellers is clear-focused on what he wants to see: “I want this country I love to atone for slavery, for Jim Crow, for the prison-industrial complex, and for the attitude of ambivalence toward state violence against unarmed black men.”. These ladies often, but not always, are also the ones cooking the fish. Since I never heard of the author I was only mildly interested in this. After all, I learned quite a bit from this book. The churches almost always serve whiting because it’s cheap. I heard there were some parallels between what Sellers did here for the black rural South with what Vance did for white Appalachia in Hillbilly Elegy. He was remarkably candid and even emotional, willing to confess his own mistakes, discuss the many obstacles. June's Amerie's Book Club selection is My Vanishing Country by Bakari Sellers! The content of this book was super interesting and his position as a civil rights legacy is incredible. My Vanishing Country is also a love letter to fatherhood―to Sellers' father, his lodestar, whose life lessons have shaped him, and to his newborn twins, who he hopes will embrace the Sellers family name and honor its legacy. I also loved the section about anxiety, I love it when people personalize something that is so unique to each person that has it and his methods of coping with it were intriguing. Donald Trump’s election, Sellers asserts, was caused not by economic but cultural fear “that somehow, black and brown people were going to replace whites.”, Categories: With so much accomplished in his life thus far, I can only imagine what more is in store for him. I came across this book totally by chance, but I am glad I did. Every politician knows you eat white bread with fried fish, but they’re also aware that white bread sticks to your teeth and the roof of your mouth like glue. I went into this having only vaguely heard of Bakari Sellers but ended up flying through it (I read it in less than 24 hours). It’s short because the author is young and builds much of his story around experiences of his father that impacted the family, specifically the Orangeburg Massacre, which I did not know about before reading Bakari Sellers’ memoir. He presents historical context, sociological analysis, and religious sentimentality all within the framework of memoir. I will definitely encourage others to read this interesting, educational, and inspiring memoir. It hit me hard. I have always enjoyed watching Bakari Sellers on CNN and was eager to read this and learn more about him. It wasn’t clear that Sellers connected with the people he quoted for this book; in fact, it seemed like several of the quotations, even from his family members and close friends, were pulled from political interviews from Sellers’ time in the state house, rather than from personal conversations. But he's not interested in achieving unification by ignoring the very real systemic problems that plague our nation, and harm black Americans in particular. The educational 'corridor of shame' should be shameful for all SC citizens. He was remarkably candid and even emotional, willing to confess his own mistakes, discuss the many obstacles he faced, yet all the while acknowledging the support he received and the powerful sense of hope and faith that bolstered him through difficult times. Pre-publication book reviews and features keeping readers and industry by Amistad. Beautiful memoir written from the soul. Sellers covers the Civil Rights Movement, MLK, the Fierce Urgency of Now, the role of the church, and politics today. He’s probably positioning himself to run for some political office. He traces his father’s rise to become a friend of Stokely Carmichael and Martin Luther King, a civil rights hero, and a member of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), to explore the plight of the South's dwindling rural, black working class―many of whom can trace their ancestry back for seven generations. This would be a great book for anyone interested in learning more about his life, or American history and politics. Shorter pieces, some only a page in length, manage to effectively translate an emotional gut punch, as when Doyle’s therapist called her blooming extramarital lesbian love a “dangerous distraction.” Ultimately, the narrative is an in-depth look at a courageous woman eager to share the wealth of her experiences by embracing vulnerability and reclaiming her inner strength and resiliency.
