Bad Blood book. Thomas Piketty The Silicon valley advice for most entrepreneurs is to “fake it till you make it”. Last night when I finished this I just wanted to write a review that was haha repeated like four hundred times. Oh, Silicon Valley, the place of realized dreams and sometimes of unexpected nightmares. The answer to that question: lie. Holmes’ single-mindedness, charisma and powers of persuasion are epic, but ultimately her lack of knowledge, morals and or any true empathy for patients are her undoing. I poured myself another drink and checked out the article on her. My initial reaction was, "wow, bad news for Quest Diagnostic" (the only lab I knew of that did blood testing). I wrote to John and thanked him for his reporting and for writing this book. "Bad Blood": Well-Researched and Spell-Binding, Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2018. Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read. I don't even necessarily mean legal repercussions but like just. In Theranos’s brief, Icarus-like existence as a Silicon Valley darling, marquee investors including Robert Kraft, Betsy DeVos and Carlos Slim shelled out $900 million. While raising $9 billion through a series of aggressive (and falsified) claims and dozens of private investors, the company’s spiking net worth caught Carreyrou’s attention a few years ago. The story of Elizabeth Holmes is an extremely compelling one, and I understand that Jennifer Lawrence is being considered to play her in a future film. Early in my career I worked at a next-generation sequencing startup with Theranos-level ambitions. By all accounts, she had a vision that she genuinely believed in and threw herself into realizing. People who called Theranos to complain were ignored; employees who questioned its technology, its quality control or its ethics were fired. It's the exact kind of investigative story that I find fascinating filled with strange figures, secrecy, and moments that will make you say "how is that possible?!" I started this book and could not put it down. It's the exact kind of investigative story that I find fascinating filled with strange figures, secrecy, and moments that will make you say "how is that possible?!" Find the thing that drives the executive champion and position towards that. The story has heroes and villains, twisting and turning subplots, political intrigue and -even while we know the eventual outcome- plenty of surprises. The short version is… I followed the Elizabeth Holmes/Theranos story slightly but this book does such a fantastic job of showing how completely banana pants this situation was. Retrieve credentials. One thing is certain, when our blood work comes back saying there. Therano is mentioned explicitly in the description of the book so I don't think the choice of title has anything to do with legal issues. Som, Not really. This is his first book, and it does not disappoint. SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY From an early age Elizabeth Holmes, wanted to become an entrepreneur, maker her own fortune. BAD BLOOD Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup By John Carreyrou 352 pp. As a long-time observer and sometime competitor of Theranos I watched this tale unfold whilst working at a couple of established IVD companies. Holmes did not answer requests for an interview. He feels a “familiar rush” when he hears that patient false negatives could be life threatening — i.e., that he’s onto a big story. Elizabeth told the gathered employees that she was building a religion. WHAT? Unbelievable. Against this, Piketty arrives at a proposed system that, among other things, would redistribute wealth across societies by heavy taxation, especially of inheritances, to create a “participatory socialism” in which power is widely shared and trade across nations is truly free. | More recently, the Securities and Exchange Commission slapped Theranos and Holmes with fraud charges, though she still touts her device as having improved accuracy and importance. GENERAL BUSINESS Exhaustively reported. (She only had $500,000 to her name when her crime was uncovered, which means the millions entrusted to her had been spent on the company?). Based on Carreyrou’s dogged reporting, not even Enron lied so freely. Still, there's not much evidence she was ever under his influence; clearly at best they were equals, and at worst he was under hers, based on her observed behavior. NATURE It’s so good that it almost seems like fiction – a John Grisham thriller, maybe. Readers who like their political manifestoes in manageable sizes, à la Common Sense or The Communist Manifesto, may be overwhelmed by the latest from famed French economist Piketty (Top Incomes in France in the Twentieth Century: Inequality and Redistribution, 1901-1998, 2014, etc. Her beguiling concept was that by a simple pinprick — drawing only a drop or two of blood — Theranos could dispense with the hypodermic needle, which she likened to a gruesome medieval torture, and perform a full range of blood tests in walk-in clinics and, ultimately, people’s homes. Like Ringling Brothers, they strapped a horn on a goat and marketed it as a real thing. Here, it's aimed at the bizarre cult of Elizabeth Holmes and her "disruptive" "game changing" company, Theranos. Categories: Sounds good, many thought so, she raised millions, contracts from leading companies. She remains mysterious as a person. She would Implement, invent and sell a small machine that would only take a pin prick of blood, getting instantaneous results that would allow doctors to make medication changes, much more quickly. Theranos's second-in-command was Sunny Balwani, her combative and self-aggrandizing boyfriend. The short version is that a young entrepreneur (Elizabeth Holmes) dropped out of Stanford University to start a company that would perform 100’s of blood tests (compared to tens) with drops of blood (compared to a syringe full) without costly and bulky equipment at a very low cost. Imagine getting blood work back saying you have cancer. I loved (and was disturbed by) every second of this. The story has heroes and villains, twisting and turning subplots, political intrigue and -even while we know the eventual outcome- plenty of surprises. And most of the tests were graded not by Theranos’s proprietary technology, but by routine commercially available equipment. The heart of the problem, Carreyrou writes, was that “Holmes and her company overpromised and then cut corners when they couldn’t deliver.” To hide those shortcuts, they lied. ), start exercising more, or decide to take statins (tip: WFPB diet and exercise are much better for your overall health than statins). Doctors also rely on them, basing 70 percent of their treatment decisions on lab results. But Walgreens was plagued by a “fear of missing out.” Like many executives, they were looking over their shoulder and not at the evidence. Founded in 2003, when Holmes was just 19, the company’s claim to “fame” was its revolutionary blood-testing system, which touted the detection of everything from high cholesterol to hepatitis C to cancer using only one drop of blood. She was also paranoid and secretive. ‧ Surely, no one suspected a lie that big. could be summed up by a motivational saying inscribed on a paperweight she kept on her desk: “What would you attempt to do if you knew you could not fail?”.
